The question every serious grappler faces: should you reach for the heat pack or the ice pack? The answer has evolved with the science — and most of what people believe is wrong.
What DOMS Actually Is — and Why It Matters for BJJ
Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is pain and stiffness peaking 24–72 hours after unaccustomed or high-force training. It is caused by micro-tears in muscle fibres during eccentric loading — the exact type of work that happens when you scramble, hold top pressure, or fight grips for minutes at a time. DOMS is a self-limiting condition that typically resolves within 5–7 days, but in that window your joint position sense, peak torque, and flexibility are all reduced. For a BJJ athlete training multiple times per week, unaddressed DOMS compounds quickly into chronic fatigue and elevated injury risk.
